Subsea internet cables can detect whales — even silent ones

The existing global network of subsea fibre-optic cables can be used to monitor cetaceans, including diving whales that make no sound. Researchers found that a diving whale generates a detectable signal picked up by cables resting on the ocean floor. The technology could enable large-scale tracking of marine mammals without the need for new infrastructure.
