How to tell if you damaged your eyes looking at a solar eclipse

Looking at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper eclipse glasses can damage the retina. Early symptoms include blurred vision, dark spots in the visual field and altered colour perception. Symptoms may appear several hours after exposure, and in serious cases the damage to eyesight can be permanent.
