Solar eclipse of 12 August thrilled millions across Europe, especially in Spain

On 12 August 2026, the Moon's shadow swept across the North Atlantic and reached Europe, where millions watched the solar eclipse from streets, beaches and mountain viewpoints. Spain was the most spectacular location, experiencing its first total solar eclipse in over a century, with the path of totality crossing Galicia, the Basque Country, Aragon, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The next record-breaking eclipse, lasting over seven minutes, will not occur until 16 July 2186.
