Japan lodges formal protest after Putin visits disputed Kuril Islands

Japan's foreign minister handed Russia's ambassador a formal protest note after Vladimir Putin visited a disputed island in the Kuril Islands archipelago. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the visit had "hurt the feelings" of the Japanese people. The Kuril Islands have been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Japan and Russia.
