236-million-year-old fossil overturns theory that mammal ancestors laid eggs

Scientists have discovered a 236-million-year-old cynodont fossil that provides the first evidence that these animals gave birth to live young. Until now, it was widely believed that cynodonts — the ancestors of all modern mammals — laid eggs. The finding rewrites the evolutionary history of mammalian reproduction.
