Array of 900 one-metre telescopes proposed to analyse atmospheres of Earth-like exoplanets

A Shanghai-led research team has proposed deploying a fleet of 900 one-metre telescopes flying in formation to collectively analyse starlight filtered through the atmospheres of Earth-like exoplanets during transits. Because the signal is roughly one part in a million and a true Earth-twin transits only once a year, each observation must succeed on its own — making the array a practical alternative to a single impossibly large space mirror. The concept aims to answer whether distant planets could host life.
