Dodo was nocturnal and smarter than thought, new study finds

Scientists scanned dodo skulls and found the visual-processing region of the brain was unusually small — on par with nocturnal birds — suggesting the iconic Mauritius bird may have been active primarily in the dark. Doctoral candidate Sara Citron says the findings challenge the long-held image of the dodo as a dim-witted creature. No evidence of low intelligence was found. Dodos went extinct within a century of humans settling Mauritius.
