Lebanon abolishes death penalty, first in the Middle East to do so

Lebanon's parliament voted on Tuesday to abolish the death penalty, making it the first country in the Middle East to take this step. The country had not carried out an execution since 2004, though death sentences continued to be handed down — including one issued the day before the vote. Amnesty International reported that at least 85 people were on death row as of January this year.
