Australian Coalition plan to scrap home energy standards slammed as 'cost-of-living timebomb'

Australia's Coalition opposition plans to cut the National Construction Code from over 2,000 pages to 80 and scrap compulsory energy and accessibility standards for new homes. Housing spokesperson Andrew Bragg said all requirements beyond "basic and safe" would become optional extras. Critics warn the move would be a "cost-of-living timebomb" that deepens inequality by raising heating and cooling bills for the poorest households.
