Scientists use 1,200 Starlink satellites to scan Earth's upper atmosphere

Researchers have used orbital data from roughly 1,200 Starlink satellites to map changes in atmospheric density about 500 kilometres above Earth — a layer notoriously hard to observe by other means. The technique reconstructs density shifts that affect how satellites move in orbit. The approach could sharpen satellite tracking and help reduce the growing collision risk in increasingly crowded orbital space.
