Lebanon abolishes death penalty and passes sweeping prison amnesty law

Lebanon's parliament passed a sweeping amnesty law on Wednesday, reducing sentences for inmates and releasing people held without charge for more than 12 years to ease severe prison overcrowding. The legislation came a day after Lebanon became the first Middle Eastern country to abolish the death penalty. Both moves represent a significant shift in the country's criminal justice system.
