Humpback whales return to Rio — conservation success but tourism raises concerns

Humpback whales are returning to the waters near Rio de Janeiro as their population recovers from the whaling era. Whale-watching tourism has boomed, with boats departing from near the Cagarras Islands, just 5 km from Ipanema beach. However, some marine biologists question whether surging tourist numbers can coexist with conservation, warning that boat traffic may disrupt whale behaviour and recovery.
