Unique 15th-century Czerskan barge recovered from Vistula riverbed heads to museum
A barge (szkuta) discovered in 2009 near Czersk castle and raised from a former Vistula riverbed in 2018 has been confirmed as the first near-complete example of its type from the late 15th century. The vessel measures 30 metres long and 7 metres wide, and was used to transport grain along the Vistula. Dendrochronological analysis showed the timber was felled in the second half of the 15th century, making it a rare artefact from the golden age of Polish river trade. It will now go on museum display.
