Student dorms increasingly expensive and overcrowded, forcing students to work
The cost of places in student dormitories is rising while vacancies are scarce, making affordable housing a key factor in whether students can study away from home at all. Those who fail to secure a dorm room are increasingly forced to share private flats and take up paid work alongside their studies. The Student Housing Initiative trade union (SIN) warns that many dorms still suffer from poor living standards.
