1969 meteorite reveals planets form around pre-solar stardust specks
Caltech researchers analysed fragments of a meteorite that fell over Mexico in 1969 and found inside them grains of stardust from a star that lived and died before the Sun formed. The findings suggest that, just as snowflakes crystallise around specks of dust, the earliest solid bodies in the Solar System formed around pre-existing stellar grains rather than condensing from a uniform gas.
