Neanderthal gene variant boosts muscle mass by ~270 g per copy

A new study finds that Neanderthals passed a variant of the growth hormone receptor gene to modern humans through interbreeding around 47,000 years ago. The Neanderthal version differs by two amino acid changes and one deletion, causing cells to respond more strongly to growth hormone. Each copy of the variant is associated with roughly 270 grams of additional muscle mass, according to geneticist Hugo Zeberg of the Karolinska Institute. The variant is rare in the modern human population.
