NASA to chase August 12 total solar eclipse with balloons and high-altitude jet

NASA will use its WB-57 high-altitude research jet to chase the Moon's shadow during the total solar eclipse on August 12, extending the window for capturing data from the event. The agency's Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project will also coordinate teams to release balloons measuring how Earth's atmosphere changes when the eclipse darkens the sky. Together, the instruments will enable observations of the Sun's corona that are impossible outside of totality.
