Olympic hammer champion Nowicki eliminated in Birmingham Europeans qualifying

Wojciech Nowicki, Olympic champion from Tokyo and defending European champion in the hammer throw, was eliminated in the qualifying round at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The 37-year-old from Białystok was blunt in his assessment: "I won't sugarcoat it — I messed up; my coach gave everything." Nowicki took full personal responsibility for the failure.
