Lebanon abolishes death penalty — first country in the Middle East to do so
Lebanon's parliament has voted to abolish the death penalty, becoming the first country in the Middle East to do so. Death sentences will be replaced with life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour. The move is seen as a landmark decision in a region where capital punishment remains widely practised.
