Apple developing feature to verify iPhone photos aren't AI deepfakes
Apple is reportedly developing an iOS 27 feature called "Apple Reference Image" that embeds provenance metadata into photos at the moment they are taken with an iPhone camera. The system, spotted in iOS 27 beta 5 by 9to5Mac, would allow users to prove a photograph was genuinely captured by an iPhone rather than generated by AI. The feature addresses growing concerns about deepfake images and photo authenticity.
