Splitting the MMR vaccine into separate shots could harm children, history shows
President Trump's executive order requiring the MMR vaccine to be split into separate measles, mumps and rubella shots risks increasing missed doses and rising illness in children, experts warn. The combined vaccine dates to 1963, when Merck scientist Maurice Hilleman isolated the mumps virus from his daughter Jeryl Lynn. A more complex separate-shot schedule historically leads to lower overall vaccination rates.
