Devon hospital maternity unit shut indefinitely — staff given emergency birth training
The maternity unit at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple has been suspended indefinitely due to staff shortages, forcing pregnant women to travel at least an hour and a half to Exeter when in labour. Doctors and nurses at the hospital have been given a crash course in handling birth emergencies in case women cannot make the journey in time. Concerns are growing over the safety of mothers and babies in one of England's most remote areas.
