Syrian court convicts al-Assad of crimes against humanity, sentences him to death

A Syrian court sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, citing his regime's responsibility for crimes and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The verdict was announced on Tuesday. Assad is believed to be currently residing in Russia.
