Syrian court sentences Bashar al-Assad to death

A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad and his cousin Atef Najib to death. The trial is one of the most significant proceedings addressing accountability for repression carried out under the ousted leader's rule. Assad is in exile and did not appear before the court.
