Millions of animals killed in European wildfires, ecologists warn

Wildfires that raged across France and Spain this summer killed at least 13 people and forced over 200,000 to evacuate. Wildlife disaster response expert Céline Sissler-Bienvenu estimates that millions of animals perished in the blazes. The fires destroy cover, food sources and clean water access, threatening species including the Gibraltar spadefoot toad. Scientists point to climate change as the key driver of intensifying fires.
