Asteroid Apophis approaching Earth — two space missions prepared to study it

Asteroid 99942 Apophis, a rocky object roughly 370 metres long, is approaching Earth and is expected to pass within 32,000 kilometres of our planet. Scientists are closely monitoring it and preparing two spacecraft missions to study it up close. The exceptionally close flyby presents a rare scientific opportunity.
