US and IAEA push to clear regulatory barriers for floating nuclear reactors at sea

The US government is backing an IAEA initiative called ATLAS, launching in Washington on August 26–27, aimed at clearing regulatory barriers for civilian nuclear reactors on ships and floating platforms. Such floating nuclear power plants could eventually supply energy to coastal communities and energy-intensive industries, including desalination. The push is framed by Washington as part of "unleashing American energy dominance".
