Xbox fixes bug that prevented physical disc games from launching

Xbox has apparently fixed the bug that contributed to some players being unable to launch games, including those on physical discs , in a new update it's deploying. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet hopes the fix sticks – and that Xbox products in the future won't be so sensitive.

Van Vliet is one of Xbox Game Studios CEO Asha Sharma's many new executive recruits – he's been the CTO since May, and he oversaw Microsoft's Azure OpenAI business product before that. So no wonder he sounds nervous. Two weeks ago, Van Vliet apologized for the "unacceptable situation" that was Microsoft's game launch bug, and he writes in an update on Twitter that Xbox engineers are actively looking for ways to improve its clearly vulnerable software.

The CTO explains that "an underlying service required for XBOX Home Console sharing and Game Pass purchased content, as well as some PC scenarios" completely toppled after a system update. This issue then met and joined forces with a bug buried "in the XBOX client software stack," says Van Vliet, making "other license checks" fail and triggering "cascading failure scenarios that affected some players' ability to launch games."

Xbox will take over the "underlying service" that failed and, up until now, sat "outside of XBOX," according to Van Vliet's first Twitter post on the subject. That patch that includes the necessary bug fix to go along with that approach "becomes mandatory August 17," says Van Vliet, after which, he has big plans.

The CTO half-explains, "Our engineering and operations teams are looking broadly across our stack to improve reliability of our products and services. We will have more updates to share in the weeks and months ahead as we roll out some great new features for players, paired with quality-of-life systems updates." Vague – but who doesn't like "quality-of-life systems updates"?

"Appreciate the explanations," one Twitter poster says honestly , "even though I don't understand what it means."
