Europe smashes heat records: Slovakia 42.2°C, Hungary breaks 1905 mark

High pressure dominated central and eastern Europe in early August, shattering temperature records across the region. Austria reached 41.2°C, Slovakia hit 42.2°C, and Hungary recorded 41.8°C, surpassing a record set in 1905, with overnight temperatures staying above 28°C in some areas. The extreme heat is driven by a heat dome trapping warm air near the surface. Wildfires and drought are intensifying across the continent.
