Włodarczyk qualifies for European hammer final by just 14 cm above the mark

World record holder Anita Włodarczyk, 41, survived a nervy qualifying round in the hammer throw at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, clearing the qualifying standard by just 14 centimetres on her final attempt. The six-time European Championships medallist — including four golds — will now compete in the final in defence of her silver from Rome. A second Polish athlete also qualified, giving Poland two shots at a podium finish.
