German churches lose 660,000 members but collect record €12.5 bn in church tax

Around 660,000 Germans formally left the Catholic and Protestant churches in 2025, yet the two institutions collected more than €12.5 billion through the church tax — up from €12.4 billion in 2024. The apparent paradox is explained by rising wages and Germany's progressive tax system: those who remain tend to earn more and thus pay higher levies.
