Greece's aging power grid sparked fires that burned 75% of this year's scorched land

Preliminary data from Greece's Arson Crimes Investigation Directorate shows that fires ignited by the electricity grid account for roughly 75% of all land burned in Greece this year. Grid-related fires tend to ignite during high winds and peak electricity demand in remote areas, making them especially prone to rapid, catastrophic spread. Two deadly late-July wildfires — in western Attica and on Crete — have also been preliminarily linked to power infrastructure.
