US: food companies must now notify FDA of all additives for the first time

The US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday that companies must notify the FDA before adding any new substance to human or animal food, providing details on how they deemed it "generally recognised as safe" (GRAS). Manufacturers already using GRAS substances must disclose how those additives are used — information that will be made public in a new database. Previously, most additives entered the food supply with little regulatory oversight.
