Digital IDs cannot fulfil their promise without global interoperability

By 2029, over 5.6 billion people are expected to own a digital identity wallet, yet these credentials remain largely unrecognised outside their country of issue. The lack of global interoperability forces users to upload physical IDs for cross-border transactions – exactly the security risk digital IDs were meant to eliminate. The problem is further complicated by the rise of autonomous AI agents executing international purchases on behalf of users. Experts are calling for an international legal and technical framework to bridge the gap.
