Rhine water levels critically low — key German waterway at risk of closure
A prolonged lack of rainfall has caused the Rhine to drop to critically low levels, threatening to halt cargo traffic on one of Europe's most important inland waterways. The Federal Association of Inland Shipping warns the river may be split into two separate navigational zones. Several German states have already lifted restrictions on heavy road transport to offset the impact on shipping.
