Dr. Maura Gillison, who linked throat cancer to HPV, dies at 61

Dr. Maura L. Gillison, the oncologist who established the link between HPV and head and neck cancers, has died at the age of 61. Her research challenged the prevailing view that cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol use were the primary causes of these cancers. Her work fundamentally changed the understanding, prevention and treatment of throat cancer.
