Windscribe's open-source script permanently strips Microsoft's hidden Windows tracking ID

VPN provider Windscribe has released a free, open-source PowerShell script called deGDID on GitHub that permanently removes Microsoft's Global Device Identifier — a persistent tracking marker that operates below the VPN layer — from the Windows registry. The tool also blocks Microsoft's DeviceAdd endpoint, preventing the device from being re-identified. However, running it breaks some Microsoft services, including login.live.com and account verification. Its release follows a federal case in which the identifier reportedly helped the FBI locate an alleged hacker.
