Russia and Taliban sign military cooperation deal, reshaping Central Asia ties

Russia and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan signed a military and technical cooperation agreement on 27 May 2026, marking a further step in the political normalisation of the Taliban movement. Moscow had until recently officially designated the Taliban as a terrorist organisation. Russia is using the partnership to reassert its influence across Central Asia.
