Japan breaks nuclear taboo — PM opens debate on acquiring atomic weapons
On the 81st anniversary of the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signalled openness to debating whether Japan should acquire nuclear weapons. This marks a significant shift for a country that has long maintained a non-nuclear policy. Japan remains the only nation to have suffered atomic bomb attacks in wartime.
