Nauru renames itself Naoero to break with colonial past

President David Adeang of Nauru has announced the island nation will revert to its traditional name, Naoero, shedding its colonial-era designation. The change is intended to protect the local language and restore indigenous identity. Nauru, the world's smallest republic, joins a growing list of countries — including Eswatini and North Macedonia — that have renamed themselves in recent years.
