Centrelink pursues debts over 40 years old despite agreeing to waive old arrears

Australia's Centrelink welfare agency is pursuing $4.93 billion in unpaid debts, with some dating back more than 40 years, despite the government agreeing to implement a six-year statute of limitations on debt recovery. Peak legal body Economic Justice Australia is calling for the debts to be wiped entirely. Australia's leading welfare expert has warned it is impossible to verify the accuracy of such old claims.
