Google DeepMind's AI predicted Hurricane Melissa 5 days out with 80% accuracy
Google DeepMind and Google Research's AI model WeatherNext predicted with 80% confidence that a Caribbean storm would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane — five days before landfall. Hurricane Melissa caused flooding and landslides across Jamaica, but the early warning enabled communities to better prepare. A study published Thursday in Nature shows WeatherNext predicts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy, giving forecasters on average one extra day of lead time over existing models.
