Flesh-eating screwworm flies infest over 500 humans in Mexico in 2025
Since the New World screwworm fly reinvaded Mexico in 2024, over 500 human cases have been recorded in 2025 and 2026, according to Mexico's Ministry of Health. A study in Emerging Infectious Diseases covering 200+ confirmed cases from April 2025 to March 2026 found the infestation rate is accelerating. Among those confirmed cases, six deaths were reported, with at least one directly caused by the fly's maggots.
