NASA to extend Voyager 1's life by exploiting a 1970s hardware quirk

NASA plans to execute a "big bang" power diversion manoeuvre on Voyager 1, exploiting a quirk in its 1970s-era hardware to keep the probe operational. The same procedure was previously tested successfully on Voyager 2. Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object in space.
