NIH plans to bar international visa-holders from key biomedical research funding

The National Institutes of Health intends to restrict its "Pathways to Independence" (K99/R00) award to US citizens, permanent residents and non-citizen nationals, closing the door on international researchers on visas. The programme has historically been one of the few federal funding avenues open to foreign scientists, covering two years of postdoctoral study and three years as an independent lab head. Experts warn the change will drive away top international talent from US biomedical research.
