Gdańsk's iconic ice cream parlour hides Poland's oldest wooden church beneath it
In 2025, archaeologists excavating beneath Gdańsk's iconic ice cream parlour "Miś" uncovered a medieval tombstone engraved with a knight in chainmail, a cemetery with over 300 graves, and an intact knight's skeleton from the turn of the 13th–14th century. Dendrochronological dating suggests the discovered wooden beams may date to as far back as 1140, potentially making them the remains of Poland's oldest wooden church. Gdańsk now plans to share the find with the world.
