NASA's 'Big Bang' maneuver buys Voyager 2 another year of science

NASA's "Big Bang" maneuver on Voyager 2 — selectively swapping high-power devices for lower-power alternatives — has saved one of the probe's three remaining science instruments from being shut down, extending its mission by roughly a year. The trick keeps the spacecraft warm enough to operate in interstellar space. Scientists are now preparing to apply the same procedure to Voyager 1.
