Antwerp's 'human zoo': Belgium confronts its colonial shame

In 1894, during Antwerp's World's Fair, 144 Congolese people were forcibly brought to Belgium and exhibited in a so-called "human zoo" at the Congo Pavilion. Seven of the men died of disease during the exhibition. The shocking episode remains one of the darkest chapters in Belgian colonial history and continues to fuel debate about confronting the past.
