SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage slams into the Moon at 8,700 km/h

On 5 August at around 8:35 a.m. Polish time, the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket — designated 2025-010D — struck the Moon near the Einstein and Bell craters at 8,700 km/h. The object had been drifting uncontrolled in Earth orbit for over a year after launching on 15 January 2025 from Kennedy Space Center. Scientists hope studying the resulting crater will shed light on lunar soil behaviour, while also highlighting the growing problem of space debris.
