Mexico deploys 1,575 soldiers to guard avocado farms amid cartel extortion

Mexico's Defence Ministry has deployed 1,575 soldiers and National Guard members to protect avocado plantations in the state of Michoacán. The move aims to persuade the United States to resume export inspections of Mexican avocados, which Washington suspended on security grounds. Mexican media have linked the situation to extortion by drug cartels operating in the region.
